Jiribam, July 11 2023:
A number of trucks carrying loads are stuck at Jiribam as the Government has banned their movement on National Highway-37, said All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers' Union (AJRTDU) .
Appealing to the Government to allow their movement towards Imphal considering hardships the truckers are facing, AJRTDU secretary L Maniton said the vehicles are stuck at Jiribam since July 1 .
While the Government had allowed movement of heavy vehicles till June 28 on NH-37, the 14 and 16 wheeler vehicles arrived on July 1 only as they were delayed by landslide in Meghalaya.
The blockade on NH-2 has diverted almost all vehicles to take the NH-37 Imphal-Jiribam road and the Government must have banned the movement of the heavy vehicles on the NH-37 as it may damage the road during the monsoon.
However, stuck at Jiribam, the drivers are facing immense difficulties, he said appealing to the Government to allow them to travel towards Imphal and reach home within 3 days.
He blamed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for the deplorable condition of NH-37 .
The Nung Dolan bridge which is said to be in a bad shape was repaired only once in 2019 when a vehicle got stuck on it, he added.
Ksh Bimol, one of the drivers stuck at Jiribam Railway Station, said the drivers agree with the ban put in place by the Government but they are facing 'difficulties and a lot of problems' .
One of the drivers fell unconscious today and he was taken to the hospital, he said.
The drivers want to abide by the Government's ban but they want to reach home, he said, appealing to the Government to allow their movement towards Imphal.
