Roadside plantation held to beautify Ukhrul town

Roadside tree plantation was organised in Ukhrul town on Tuesday, which marked the end of the two-day mass plantation campaign held under the 74th Van Mahotsav celebration.
The day-two programme was attended by Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah as chief guest and DFO Ukhrul Shanngam Shali as functional president, while Ukhrul deputy commissioner Zuringla Kengoo and additional SP Ringthing Hongchui were present as guests of honour.
'Ukhrul district is a blessed land with rich natural resources, flora and fauna," the MLA said, while recalling that.it was once home to myriad tree species like cedar, fir, deodar.
Stating that the climatic conditions of the district are favourable for all these tree species, he observed that unrestrained burning of forests has resulted in the loss of these valuable trees today.
"But it's not too late yet, so let's start planting trees to restore our past glory,'' he appealed to the participants.
The MLA also shared the vision of gushing up the town, starting from Ukhrul town to Phungreitang and Mission Ground, Awontang in following year.
The mass plantation was organised by Ukhrul Forest Division in collaboration with the district administration.
As part of the event, the dignitaries led by the MLA
carried out ceremonial plantation at the main entrance of the mini-secretariat complex.
After which the residents and local authorities gathered together to plant various saplings along the roadsides of the town from Dungrei Junction to Town hall.
Around SOO tree saplings including yellow pine, cypress and other species were planted on Tuesday.
It may be mentioned that a total of around 1000 saplings were planted during the programme which commenced on Monday at Shirui village.
