Imphal, October 30 2023: Incidence of cancer among women is higher than in men in Manipur.

There are around 103 cancer cases for every one lakh female population as compared to 74 cases for every one lakh male population, said Dr Thangjam Dhabali.

He made the statement during a screening cum awareness programme on breast cancer held at Babina Diagnostic at Porompat today.

The programme was organised by the American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Babina Specialty Hospital and Babina Diagnostic in association with All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) .

The programme, under the theme "Thrive 365", was organised as a part of breast cancer awareness month.

Speaking at the event, Chairman and Managing Director Babina Group Dr Thangjam Dhabali said most cases of cancer globally are breast cancer and according to a study, the rate of incidence of cancer is rising in India.

Breast cancer accounts for 12.7 percent of cancer cases followed by lung cancer at 12.2 percent.

Cervical cancer was very common in Manipur some years ago, but now breast cancer has become the most common form of cancer, he said.

In North East, incidence of cancer among men is highest in Mizoram.

274 persons are diagnosed with cancer for every one lakh population.

Incidence of cancer is highest in women in Arunachal Pradesh with 170 cases for every one lakh population.

When compared to other North East States, the incidence rate of cancer is less in Manipur.

The incidence of cancer in men in Manipur is around 74 cases for every one lakh population.

Incidence of cancer among women is relatively higher than in men.

There are around 103 cancer cases for every one lakh female population in Manipur, he said.

While lung cancer is common among men, breast cancer is most common among women.

Adapting and changing to a healthy lifestyle and early detection can prevent and cure these diseases, he said.

AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam said generating awareness on breast cancer is a must and early detection is crucial for successful treatment.

He encouraged journalists to write about breast cancer and spread awareness among the people.

AOI Internal Medicine Dr Neha Thangjam and Surgical Oncology Dr Dhanabir Thangjam said breast cancer awareness month or pink month is observed to spread awareness about breast cancer, encourage early detection and give support to victims of breast cancer.

Dr Neha opined that the breast cancer awareness month should be observed yearlong considering its importance.

The number of breast cancer cases and deaths due to it is high in South East Asia.

A reason for this is lack of awareness.

Breast cancer is also most common in Manipur, she said.

AOI Facility Director Manas Majumder and Marketing Head Gopen Tongbram also attended the programme.
