Govt to organise professional tax enrolment drive

The Department of Taxes would be launching a comprehensive professional tax enrolment drive, encompassing a wide range of professions and trades.
This initiative is scheduled to commence on November 1, and aims to ensure that all eligible individuals and organisations are duly registered for professional tax.
An official notification issued by the department informed that the enrolment drive will cover a diverse spectrum of entities, including private schools & colleges, private hospitals and clinics, private nursing homes, pharmacies, cable services, newspaper publishing houses, hotels, restaurants, stone crushers, brick kilns, shops, handloom and handicrafts units, furniture shops, quarries, mills, and other service providers.
In essence, it encompasses all forms of professions, established trades, and employments through which individuals earn a livelihood.
The authority to levy professional tax is derived from Article 276 of the Indian Constitution, and the state government is constitutionally empowered to collect this tax on professions, trades, callings, and employment, with an annual cap of Rs 2500.To ensure success of this initiative, district-wise teams have been formed to facilitate and supervise the enrolment process under the guidance of respective DCs.
Furthermore, all Municipal Councils have established their own teams under the supervision of MAHUD director to enrol all shops and establishments within their jurisdictions.
Appealing to all private traders, professionals, institutions, service providers, and other eligible entities to actively participate in the special enrolment drive, the Department of Taxes explained that through registration for professional tax, one will not only fulfil his/her legal obligations but also contribute to bolstering the state's financial resources.
