Imphal, October 30 2023:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) legal department chairman S Shyamacharan has appealed to law enforcing agencies of the state to respect and honour democracy and not to indulge in any act that is in contravention of democratic principles.
Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, here, on Monday, Shyamacharan said that workers and leaders of 10 like-minded Opposition political parties including Congress party took out a rally on October 13 for submitting a memorandum to the Governor with request for restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
The rally was taken out in a peaceful and democratic manner until City police station personnel acted in an undemocratic and hostile manner thereby leading to an unwanted incident.
After the incident, police pulled up six volunteers of MPCC's student wing but all of them were released on bail after the party contested the arrest in the law court.
Police also levelled unfounded allegations against the six MPCC workers and even launched a manhunt to nab them as if they were criminals.
However, MPCC fought the case in the law court and all of them have been granted anticipatory bail on Monday, Shyamacharan said.
Deeply saddened by present situation of lawlessness in the state, Shyamacharan said that people should start questioning those in the government if they are ruling the state or simply taking care of flowers.
He said that state government seems to be shedding crocodile's tears over the two students who went missing since July 6 but unable to recover their bodies till date.
The press conference was also attended by MPCC legal department vice chairman advocate Rabi Khan and general secretary (legal in-charge) Wahidur Rahman.
