Imphal, October 30 2023:
Mega Manipur School has embarked on an inspiring journey to combat climate change by launching the "Waste to Wealth" project.
In collaboration with the directorate of environment and climate change, the school aims to instil a sense of environmentally conscious behaviour among its students.
The project was inaugurated by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change director Dr T Brajakumar, who also donated two Bottle Banks to the school.
At the launch event held at the premises of the school, Dr Brajakumar stressed the importance of students taking action to address climate issues right from their kitchens.
He commended the school for raising awareness about the environmental hazards posed by plastic and encouraged students to embrace the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic as much as possible.
Thangjam Agro Industries Private Limited managing director Th Joykumar shared insights on how industries, including those that use plastic, are contributing to addressing the plastic problem.
Recognising the convenience that plastic provides in our daily lives, he emphasised on responsible disposal of plastic to achieve a win-win situation, saving our planet while using plastic responsibly.
S Itombi of SJ Plastics, which engages in plastic recycling, encouraged students to play their part in reusing and recycling plastics.
He mentioned that his firm purchases used plastics to recycle, thereby helping to reduce plastic pollution.
The concept of turning waste into wealth is not entirely new, although its adoption at Mega Manipur School is a fresh initiative.
Mega Manipur School secretary Yumnam Rupachandra cited an innovative example where a school in Assam accepts plastic bottles from students instead of school fees.
He encouraged the students, through its Eco clubs, to bring in plastic bottles, used books, and clothing for reuse, thereby diminishing their personal carbon footprint on the planet.
School chairman T Sanajaoba appreciated the directorate of environment and climate change for their collaboration and support.
The school principal, Aton Lungar, who presided over the event, urged students to translate the experts' advice they received into meaningful actions.
