Radio's relevance strong as ever: Dr Radheshyam

The 2nd Foundation Day of Radio Nongin, operating on 90.8 MHz FM channel, was celebrated at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), here, on Tuesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Hiyanglam AC MLA Dr Y Radheshyam recounted that after it was proven in early 20th century i.e., in 1883 of the existence of radio waves, the first radio transmission in the world was done in 1906 and then, the regular service programme began in California, USA in 1908.People all over the world were shocked to witness something impossible becoming possible.
As such, Radio became the biggest technological discovery of the time, he conveyed.
The MLA continued that the invention of TV and digital satellite in the 21st century affected radio but it continues to benefit the masses till date.
Radio Nongin was launched in 2019 unofficially, but went on to become an official channel on April 4, 2021.The programme was able to grasp the heart of its listeners, he remarked, while wishing the channel all the best for the future.
Delivering the keynote speech, Radio Nongin administrator RK Nungthilchaibi said that Radio Nongin is a licensed channel under the Ministry of Information and Broad casting.
The channel sought clearances from 7 different ministries to promote a platform for community.
After getting the clearances, the Ministry conveyed that it would cancel the clearance if it did not begin operation within 3 months.
As such, the channel made immense efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and started transmitting programmes.
Its initial transmission hours from 10 am to 9 pm have been further extended by one more hour, she informed.
Nungthilchaibi continued that no matter how advanced digital media has become, radio still continues to hold its place.
She then said that 'Nongin gi Khongchant' and 'Nongin gi Tomthin' have the highest number of listeners amongst the programmes transmitted by the channel, which is run by only eight staff.
Presided over by social worker and entrepreneur Rajkumar Nongdrenkhomba Meetei, the function was also attended by Lamlai AC MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha, former minister Dr M Nara and Lilong Haoreibi College principal Dr Raheijuddin Sheikh (Shamu) as guests of honour.
During the function, Dr M Nara gifted a poem, 'Prakitina Tengthaba', followed by presentation of gifts to a guest who participated in Radio Nongin's programme, 'Nongin gi Tomthin' ten times.
The eight staff of the channel were also introduced and honoured on the occasion.
