RIMS becomes first Govt institution to install rTMS machine in NE

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal has become the first Government institution in North East to install a rTMS machine.
rTMS stands for "Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation," which is a non-invasive technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.
rTMS is used in the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and chronic pain.
The machine was installed and inaugurated at the Department of Psychiatry by RIMS Director Professor H Priyoshakhi Devi today, said a statement released by the institute.
The inauguration of the system was also attended by Medical Superintendent Professor N Sanjib Singh; Dean (Academic) Professor Brogen Singh Akoijam and Associate Professor & HOD of Psychiatry Dr S Gojendra Singh and faculty members as well as students.

At the event held at Dr Kamal Hall, Dr S Gojendra Singh claimed that RIMS is the first Government hospital in the North East to install such a machine which will aid in the treatment of patients suffering from depression, stroke, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), insomnia and other mental conditions.
He also mentioned that the cost of rTMS treatment per session in a private institution ranges between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 .
However, RIMS is considering providing the service for a relatively lower amount or for free to the public.
Former HOD of Psychiatry, Dr RK Lenin appreciated the authorities installing the rTMS machine and stated that the machine will help provide more effective treatments to the patients and also help students in their research.
He also stressed on the need for more infrastructure development in the Psychiatry Ward.
RIMS Director, Professor H Priyoshakhi Devi acknowledged the impeccable services being provided by the Psychiatry Department and pledged to upgrade the Psychiatry Ward.
