Imphal, April 04 2023:
In continuation of their long standing demand to revoke the partial lifting of prohibition on alcohol, the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol in association staged a sit-in protest at Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai under Imphal West district.
A statement issued by CADA has informed that the sit-in protest was jointly organised by All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Women's Social Cultural Development Association, Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai and CADA.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Yensembam Binasakhi, secretary general of Women's Social Cultural Development Association, Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai proclaimed that with the State Government's decision to legalize alcohol, instances of alcohol abuse and sale of alcohol in local streets has increased exponentially.

She maintained that when somebody in a household becomes an addict or falls prey to narcotic substances, the entire household suffers and in extension, so does the locality.
Stating that the Association will lend its support to any movement against narcotic substances, she appealed to the State Government to look into the increasing number of addicts, both men and women in the State and take up appropriate measures to save them.
"Alcohol consumption is increasingly becoming common among young people including girls.
At this rate, meira paibis might not even exist in the future and this could spell trouble for our society in the long run", she opined.
The protestors also raised various slogans against legalisation of alcohol such as "Alcohol legalisation cannot be enforced in Manipur", "Revoke Cabinet decision" and "Save the people of Manipur from alcohol abuse" .
