Imphal, April 04 2023:
In continuation of the series of protest against legalisation of production and sale of liquor, Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) in association with All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) and Women's Social Cultural Development Association (WSCDA), Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai organised a sit-in protest at Maibam Leikai on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, WSCDA secretary general Yensembam Binasakhi pointed out that as the number of liquor vendors increased in the state after the government legalised liquor, it has started to adversely affect individual families, their economy as well as family relationships.
The entire family suffers when there is an addict in a family and the association strongly opposes the government's decision, she said.
At the same time, liquor consumption has become a fashion statement in contemporary society with even women and underage teens using alcoholic beverages at different events, the secretary maintained while drawing attention of the government.
Protestors shouted slogans against liquor legalisation and raised demands for withdrawing the cabinet decision.
