Imphal, April 04 2023:
Students of JNIMS Dental College have demanded the authorities to recruit/engage graduates of the college as paid Junior Residents (JRs) on merit basis.
Speaking to the media at the JNIMS Complex today, a representative of the students who doesn't want to be named decried that the authority concerned has not recruited or engaged any of the graduates from the JNIMS Dental College as paid JRs since 2021 .
"In January, the students had approached JNIMS authority urging it to recruit graduates as paid JRs in the Dental Department for six months on merit basis-top 13 students for the first 6 months and the remaining students for another 6 months.
The related examination was also conducted to effect the same, however, the results have not been declared till date," the student said.
While urging the authorities to recruit 13 JRs, the student also decried that the State Cabinet had decreased the number of sanctioned posts of JRs to 4 .
On the other hand, JNIMS Director Dr L Deben has alleged that some senior doctors in the JNIMS Dental Department and graduates are instigating students to stage agitation and raise the demand for engagement of the graduates as paid JRs.
While accusing them of instigating students, the Director alleged that the dental doctors are wanting "free time for running their own private dental clinics by handing over their office duties to the JRs" .
JNIMS authority will soon start taking up befitting action against the dental doctors who are found running their own private dental clinics, he said.
The Director then informed that there is no mandatory rule for engaging/recruiting 13 JRs in the Dental Department and said that the process for recruitment of 4 posts of JRs is underway.
The number of doctors at the Dental Department of JNIMS is 45 in addition to 50 interns, Deben said, adding that the available doctors and interns can easily manage as only about 40 to 50 patients who visit the OPD in a day.
Selection of 13 JRs will be a big financial burden to JNIMS and it will need the consent of the higher authorities of the State Government, the Director added.
