Proposed talk with UNC still undecided

Imphal, August 02 2026: Even though the State Government has invited top leaders of the United Naga Council (UNC) to a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, it has not been decided yet when and where the meeting will take place.

Talking with The Sangai Express, a key leader of UNC said that the State Government expressed its intention to hold the meeting at Imphal on August 3 but the UNC leaders are not keen to take the risk of coming to Imphal given the prevailing situation.

The UNC leaders are in favour of holding the proposed talks at Senapati.

In the backdrop of the alleged unwarranted arrest of the leaders of Joint Tribes Council (JTC) and the Rongmei Council by police commandos, Naga people do not want UNC office bearers to go to Imphal for talks with Government officials, he said.

There is no harm in holding talks but the UNC does not want to hold the meeting at Imphal under the prevailing situation.

It is this question of venue and the date of August as well, which has been keeping the proposal for holding talks undecided, the UNC leader added.
