AMUCO voices concern over continued blockade; urges Govt for relief

Imphal, August 02 2026: Making vocal its stand against blockade and counter blockade affecting State's economy, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has urged the Government to ease economic burden on the people and introduce financial packages for small scale industries and businesses.

In a statement, AMUCO said restriction of movement along the highways, buffer zones and economic blockades amid the conflict since May 3, 2023 have adversely affected the economy of the public and strangled many small scale industries and businesses.

A simple blockade that restricts movement of people or economic blockade are "dangerous weapons or instruments of war", AMUCO said.

While a section of the people are controlling the movement in Manipur, blockades or economic blockades are being used as weapons to hurt entire communities, it added. Currently, "blockade" is being used as a weapon in the tension in the Middle East and is hurting the economy and lives of the people around the world, AMUCo said, apparently referring to the blockade on the Strait of Hormuz.

An economic blockade deprives people of their livelihoods, but in Manipur, it is consistently used as a weapon by communities to get their demands.

While a party imposing a counter-blockade in response to a blockade has become a common practice, the severity of the impact on the people and the State as a whole is only increasing, AMUCO said.

A blockade or counter-blockade while affecting the economy is deepening the wedge between communities, and the State is increasingly becoming reliant on others for survival, it added.

Considering the many impacts blockades have on the State and the people, AMUCO has always been against the practice, it said.

Considering the impacts the many crises and blockades are having on the people, the State Government must therefore take steps to ease the burden on the public, AMUCO said.

Public and private banks shouldn't add burden to the loanees and seize their properties during recovery.

The State Government must approach and present Manipur's case clearly to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for necessary relief, it said.

Further, the State Government should relax or ease taxes, and introduce financial packages for small scale industries and business to improve the overall economy, AMUCO added.
