Contribution of wetlands, insects in environment highlighted

Manipur University vice-chancellor professor Naorem Lokendra has highlighted the contribution of wetlands and all living beings including insects to the environment and livelihood of human beings He was attending as chief guest of the World Wetlands Day observance organised under the theme 'Wetlands and Human Wellbeing' by Manipur University, department of forestry and environmental science at the seminar hall of the department on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, professor Lokendra stressed the need to increase the number of academic publications and reports by students, research scholars and faculty members of the University.
In the environment too, academic publications could be published by incorporating historical data of the state's ecology, he suggested.
While expressing concern over the decreasing number of academic publications in the University, the vice chancellor however, said that there are several pending thesis and dissertations of different departments.
He also emphasised on enhancing quality of such papers while adding that papers with detailed data analysis and research could be published in the University's journal.
Wetlands are hotspots of resources.
Vegetation like Yellang, water foxnuts among others, which are available in the wetlands, are important food and livelihood resources for people.
Besides, the wetlands, one of the major sources of water for consumption, also play crucial role in maintaining ecological balance in a society and there is a strong need to protect and conserve them, elaborated Prof Lokendro.
He also spoke on the need for more detailed research and analysis of Loktak Lake and other wetlands, which could be useful in policy formulation for conservation.
Department of forestry and environmental science, MU, head in-charge Dr Vivek Vaishnav, head of department of Zoology professor Th Binoy and Manipur Wetlands Authority, Technical Committee member Salam Rajesh were also present at the event as presidium members.
