World Wetlands Day observed

As observed across the globe, the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, Manipur University (MU), Imphal, today celebrated World Wetlands Day on the theme "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing" at its seminar hall.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2 to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands for human lives and the planet.
The World Wetlands Day celebration was attended by Manipur University, Vice Chancellor, Prof N Lokendro Singh; Prof Th Binoy Singh, HOD, Department of Zoology, MU; Salam Rajesh, Member-Technical Committee of Manipur Wetlands Authority; and Dr Vivek Vaishnav, HOD, Department of Forestry & Env.

It was organised under the supervision of Dr Konthoujam Khelchandra Singh, Associate Professor, Department of Forestry & Env Science, Manipur University.
The programme began with the felicitation of the guests and watering of the "Uningthou" (The State tree of Manipur) tree saplings.
At the event, Prof N Lokendro Singh enlightened the gathering about the significance of the wetlands of Manipur in the ecological history of the State.
Salam Rajesh delivered a special invited talk on "Wise Use of Wetlands" .
He also stressed on the importance of the studies on invasive species on the Loktak Lake, migratory birds and sustainable use of wetlands.
Later, certificates were distributed to the winners of Quiz Contest & Extempore competitions held as Student Outreach Programme in the morning session of the event.
Notably, Manipur has about 155 recognised wetlands covering an area of about 2.5 percent of the land that provides a wide range of ecological services which includes giving hostage to many unique floras and faunas and the upliftment of rural economy.
However, rapid human intervention had led to the deterioration of many wetlands in the State.
Some of the threatened wetlands in the State are Ikop, Waithou, Ngakrapat, Loushipat, Lamphelpat, Kharungphat, Khoidumpat, Pumlen, Lokoipat, Sanapat, Yaralpat and Poiroupat.
