Imphal, September 27 2023:
Meitei Community Victims of the 3rd May 2023 Communal Attacks at Moreh & Churachandpur district on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren urging for immediate preparation to rehabilitate the displaced victims of communal violence to their original places of birth and residence.
In the memorandum jointly signed by Meetei Council, Moreh president Mayanglambam Thoiba Meetei and Meetei Society Churachandpur president Moirangthem Thoiba, they demanded the state government to conduct an authentic assessment on the damages caused to the properties and assets of the Meitei victims in Moreh and Churachandpur; to re-fix the amount of house compensation' at the actual value of damage/destruction caused to a victim's house/ property (as shall be assessed by the assessing authority at the ground); livelihood compensation for the Moreh and Churachandpur Meitei victims of communal violence of the Kukis' for the period of the violence.
Appealing to the Chief Minister to consider their demands in the larger national interest, they maintained that the state compensation matters a lot to every shocked victim who lost everything in the violence for none of his fault.
The compensation money is the only resource he or she could claim their own to rebuild life once again.
"It is in this regard we are demanding house/property compensation at the actual value of the damage/destruction caused by the violence to the victim's house/property," they said, while adding that victims appreciate the minimum threshold house compensation amount as a strong public policy, but the amount cannot be applied as thumb rule' for every victim.
Under this circumstance, the state government must demonstrate authority and generosity by extending enabling support and relief to the devastated victims by awarding meaningful compensation' to each of them, which is the only available way forward to solve the current crisis and save Manipur from degenerating into a melancholic state, the memorandum added.
