4th Squash Festival held in Ukhrul

The 4th Squash Festival cum Fete featuring a colourful showcase of various local chayote was held at Tahao ground, Winotang in Ukhrul town.
The annual festival marks a milestone for the district, renowned for its rich variety of chayote produce.
It provides a special opportunity for visitors to learn more about the local chayote produce and celebrate the district's culture and heritage.
A total of 47 different varieties of chayote, as well as other locally indigenous vegetable harvests, are being showcased in the 20 stalls set up by various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) .
Inaugurating the two-day festival as the chief guest on Tuesday, Ukhrul DC Zurin-gla Kengoo highlighted the importance of cultivating indigenous crops and vegetables, noting that "Ukhrul is a land of fertile soils favourable for various crops and vegetables".
She also mentioned that chayote is a popular vegetable for its varied health benefits.
"It is low in calories, packed with nutrients, and has a good flavour, making it a great addition to any meal," she said.
Kengoo further noted that the district's chayote is known for its 'special taste', a sentiment echoed by Ukhrul DFO Shanngam Shaliwo and Kamjong DFO SW Suisa, who attended as guests of honour.
Director UDWIM Ringyuichon Vashum and CO 35 Assam Rifles Col Manoj Shinde were the special guests.
The Squash Festival cum Fete, organised by the local SHGs facilitated visitors to choose from the wide varieties of chayote as well as other locally indigenous vegetables from the district.
