Imphal, October 09 2023:
Informing that people living in Sekmai AC, Lamshang AC and parts of Imphal West district are facing extreme shortage of water amidst the conflict perpetrated by Kuki narco terrorists, ex minister Ningthoujam Biren has urged the government to look into the defunct Kangchup and Leimakhong water supply scheme and alleviate the problem of water crisis at hand.
Addressing a press meet held at his Phayeng residence on Monday, Biren said that people living in areas of Sekmai AC have been suffering immensely due to the conflict which has been raging on for more than five months now.
The government needs to solve the prevailing crisis as soon as possible.
Amid this, parts of Sekmai AC, Lamshang AC and Imphal West district are facing extreme shortage of water, with the Kangchup and Leimakhong water supply scheme having stopped working.
The water crisis could be further aggravated if there is no adequate rainfall.
Thus, he urged the authority concerned to look into the matter and ensure that the two water supply schemes are made functional as soon as possible.
Condemning the brutal killings of two students, the ex-minister, while lauding the arrest of the culprits involved, urged for recovery and handing over the bodies of the students to their respective families.
He also condemned the excessive force used by security forces against protesting students, especially the use of pellet guns by RAF on unarmed students.
He questioned whether the security advisor has given free rein to RAF personnel, while demanding payment of monetary compensation of Rs 50,000 to those injured by the security personnel.
Remarking that while security forces seem to acting willfully in the valley but such acts are invisible in the hill areas, Biren denounced the bias treatment between the hill and the valley.
He then contended that the state cannot be disintegrated in any form and demanded reviewing Article 3 of the Constitution of India.
He further called for demarcation of the district boundaries and taking up all requisite steps in this regard while there is still time.
