Hangul Day celebration begins

The celebration of Hangul Day (known as Korean Alphabet Day) kicked off today at Manipur University VC Hall.
Hangul Day is observed on October 9 annually to commemorate the invention of the Korean Alphabet.
Today's inaugural programme was graced by Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Professor N Lokendra Singh; Program Director, Department of Foreign Languages, MU, Professor Hyunkyung Lee; Ambassador of Republic of Korea, HE Chang Jae-bok; Director of University and Higher Education, Manipur Government, Dr Rangitabali Waikhom; Head of the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Professor Irom Gambhir Singh and Head of Department of Foreign Languages, Professor S Imoba Singh as the presidium members.
Speaking at the occasion, Professor N Lokendra Singh expressed contentment to see the advanced status of Korean studies in Manipur University.
It is a commendable feat to have facilities for Masters' degree for Korean language in the varsity, the VC said.
Stating that language is an important aspect of communication, he maintained that knowing different languages not only facilitates effective and smooth communication when one goes outside their native place but also enhances one's knowledge manifold.
He also called for measures for upliftment of Korean studies in Manipur University.
