Conservation of forest impossible without villagers' support: Biswajit

Forest, Environment and Climate Change minister Thongam Biswajit has stated that conservation of forest and protection of endangered of flora and fauna will.be impossible without the help of the villagers even if huge funds were sanctioned.
He was speaking at the valedictory programme of 69th World Life Week Celebration, 2023 organised by Forest Department at State CAMPA office and data centre located at Mantripukhri on Sunday.
The programme was attended by Forest, Environment and Climate Change minister Thongam Biswajit, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest Manipur SS Chhabra and PCCF Soreiphy Vashum.
Speaking at the programme, Thongam Biswajit stated that the rich biodiversity of Manipur is because the state is situated between Himalayan range and Myanmar.
So, there are several flora and fauna which are found only in Manipur.
According to the report of Forest Survey of India, forest covers 74.34 per cent of the land, he informed.
Stating that Ukhrul is one of the most important districts of the state as Shirui lily grows only in Shirui hill, he said that the flower cannot be planted in other areas.
The Government has sanctioned funds for protection of the plant, but it would be impossible without the help of the villagers, the minister added.
Prizes were also distributed to the winners of different competitions conducted in connection with the observance of 69th World Life Week.
