Imphal, February 02 2024: As purpose for deployment of state forces in Moreh in adequate number is to ensure peace and order in the border town despite the challenging situation in the state, the government needs to take stringent action against those defending the accused killers of SDPO Anand on October 31, demanded people displaced from Moreh.

Speaking to The People's Chronicle, the internally displaced persons (iDPs) from Moreh, who are staying in various relief camps in the valley, asserted that the government should take strict legal action against those declaring the killers of SDPO Anand, namely K Khongsai and Hemkholal Mate, who have already confessed to the crime, as innocent persons on the media.

It should also take requisite action against the leaders of Hill Tribe Council, Moreh Youth Club, KSO Moreh Block, KWA and HR and Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association Moreh, who are demanding immediate release of the duo.

Noting that deployment of state forces including commandos in Moreh is helping to maintain some semblance of peace in the border town, the IDPs said that the district administration had imposed public curfew in the town, and both central and state forces are working together to prevent any unwanted incidents.

The commando personnel deployed in the border town have not wronged any community till date.

The main reason the Kukis are demanding withdrawal of state forces from Moreh is to take over the abandoned Meetei properties in the town.

This is a fact known by all communities of Moreh but unable to raise their voice due to fear of Kuki militants.

Meanwhile, a Moreh denizen, on condition of anonymity, conveyed that no one has the right to prevent the government from deploying state forces in any part of Manipur, while adding that Kuki militants have been committing atrocities upon other communities residing in the border town for a long time.

However, the militants could not do as they please from the time the state forces were deployed.

The demand for withdrawal of commandos began when the militants could no longer carry out illegal activities.

Mentioning the attempts made by Kukis to chase away the commandos from Moreh including frequent attacks, storming complexes, pelting stones and petrol bombs; the local said that the Kuki militants took a step further by assassinating Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand on October 31 last.

Several attacks since then left many commando personnel injured and even dead.

As such, it is inevitable for the commando and state forces to return fire.

The commandos in Moreh have not misbehaved or abused the law against the different communities residing in the border town.

The Moreh denizen then urged the government to empower the security forces in Moreh with the same powers given to the security forces in Imphal city to protect the people.

The local further requested for deploying additional battalions of state forces including MR and IRB so as to restore the peace in the border town.
