Imphal, April 24 2010:
Seven thousand new vehicles are registered every year in the State, said Transport Minister L Jayantakumar today.
The Minister was speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function of the two-day workshop on 'transport system in Manipur' at Cheirap Court complex, Uripok.
Traffic congestion in Imphal roads is due to significant increase in the number of vehicles of various type in the recent time, he pointed out and added that the present roads are not able to accommodate this sudden increase.
Saying that people are not fully aware or abide traffic rules, Jayantakumar went on to say that there are even Ministers who feel proud by violating traffic rules.
Maintaining that many Government personnel break the regulations framed by themselves, he added that Ministers violate the one-way traffic system, while traffic police personnel cannot do anything other than to offer salute to them.
The Minister informed the gathering that the State has purchased 21 low floor buses.
He however said that the Government is still undecided with regard to the routes where these buses would operate.
The buses are now in Guwahati and would be brought to the State soon, he added.
Maintaining that Imphal roads still need modernisation, the Minister said that widening of the roads and development of parking lots would be taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Mission.
