'No objection to census, but NRC must come first': Kongpal Nupi Lup warns Govt

Imphal, August 19 2026: The Kongpal Khaidem Leikai Nahathong Area Nupi Lup Kanglup on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration in front of its office in support of the Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) campaign's demand to update the NRC in Manipur before conducting the Census.

Speaking to media persons, the Lup's secretary Thongbam Brajarani said the organisation is backing the JFD agitation and has also organised the protest locally.

She stated that the State Government should first complete the NRC in the State and only then go ahead with the Census.

"There is no objection to conducting the Census.

But our demand to the Government is that the NRC must be completed first", she said.

Brajarani further warned that if the Census is carried out without first updating the NRC, the Kongpal Khaidem Leikai Nahathong Area Nupi Lup will fully support all agitations launched by the public and the JFD.

She added that the protest was also held keeping in mind displaced people who are still taking shelter in relief camps due to the ongoing crisis and have not yet returned to their homes.
