Imphal, August 19 2026:
People of different communities staged a massive sit-in protest demonstration at Imphal East district's Langdum Lamkhai and enforced JFD's 48-hour general strike today.
People, largely womenfolk, of Langdum, Keirao Bitra, Keirao Khunou, Keirao Wangkhem, Khamnarok, Chanam Sandrok, Waithou Phunal Maring, Phunal Khunou, Uran Chiru, Lipharok Maring and Sandangsenba Maring took part in the demonstration.
During the protest demonstration, a Chiru woman leader said the indigenous communities in the region fully support the JFD's call for updating the NRC before Census 2027 operations.
The Government, if it stands to protect the State's and indigenous communities' future, should update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) first before conducting census operations, she said.
Updating the NRC would help identify and detect illegal immigrants settled in Manipur.
If this exercise is not conducted before hand, then there is a high chance of illegal immigrants and foreigners being recorded as citizens in the census, she added.
"People aren't against the census.
We are simply asking the Government to carry it out after the NRC is updated and foreigners are identified," she said.
The protesters raised slogans and held placards that read "No NRC, No Census", urging the Government to pause and postpone all census related exercises including the houselisting and self-enumeration operations.
