Imphal, August 19 2026:
A few MLAs visiting Delhi cannot represent the Government in the absence of a Cabinet decision, said senior Advocate Khaidem Mani, speaking to reporters at his residence at Loklaobung today.
While the purpose of the visit to Delhi is reportedly to push for NRC, they carry no weight and their endeavour is not expected to yield any result, especially when there is no Cabinet decision or the State officially backing them, Mani said.
"The MLAs have gone to Delhi, but they may not even get appointments to meet the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister or any of the Central leaders," Mani added.
If the State Government truly supports the demand for updating the NRC before the census, then the Cabinet should take a decision first to pause all census related operations, Mani said.
The State Government may cite the law and order situation as the reason for pausing the census, he added.
The Cabinet decision may then be intimated or apprised to the Centre, PM or Home Minister by sending a Minister or a high ranking bureaucrat, like the Chief Secretary, Mani said.
"There is no need for individual MLAs and a team of MLAs to visit Delhi, especially when no Cabinet decision has been taken beforehand," Mani added.
