Imphal, April 24 2010:
State Education and Transport Minister L Jayentakumar today blamed the leaders of yesteryear, back to 30 years, for the present problems facing in taking up developmental works in Imphal city saying that lack of proper planning with future vision led to the present chaotic scene in the city area.
Speaking at the opening function of the two-day workshop on transport system in Manipur organised jointly transport department and All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) at Uripok Cheirap Court Complex, the minister further said government is taking works for development of Imphal city under the Central sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission but the first and foremost task for taking the developmental work is by the widening of the roads in the city areas.
In the eviction on the road sides, inconveniences are causing to the government as well as people.
The facing problems are due to the lack of proper planning with future vision in the pass years.
If the leaders of 30 years back took up the developmental works with future vision and planning the problems might have not been faced, he observed.
For solving the difficulties and inconveniences in the movement of the people, state transport department has started taken up works for construction of bus stands and parking places suited with time.
Under the central sponsored scheme, 21 macro city buses have been procured.
The buses are on the way at Guwahati and will reach Imphal at the earliest.
But the most important thing is that there is no road which can ply the buses.
For the purpose, roads in the city area are to be broadening first, this too needs eviction, he added.
The number of vehicles on the road in Manipur is increasing at the rate of Rs 7,000 per year.
Every household and every child have two-wheeler vehicles.
But roads are not widening.
This has created traffic problems.
On the other hand, when a minister or security convoy breaks the traffic rules and regulation, traffic police personnel could do nothing while the minister is proud of enabling breaking the traffic rules, minister Jayentakumar lamented.
The inaugural function presided over by AMBA president S Brajamani was attended by Justice Maibam BK Singh, Judge of the Gauhati High Court, Major General CA Krishnan, IGAR (South), Ng Max Phazang, registrar of Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench and Th Surbala, District and Session Judge, Manipur West.
