Imphal, October 30 2023: The Legal Department of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has categorically asserted that law enforcing agencies of the State should respect and adhere to the rule of law.

Speaking to the media during a press conference at Congress Bhavan, BT Road today, Advocate Sanoujam Shyamcharan, chairman, Legal Department (MPCC) recalled that on October 13 ten Opposition political parties took out a rally from Congress Bhavan to submit a memorandum to the Governor at Raj Bhavan in connection with the ongoing crisis.

He alleged that some unknown persons began to disrupt the 'peace rally' at the northern gate of the Raj Bhavan.

Their actions led to the events that unfolded on the particular day, he said.

Subsequently, the City Police registered an FIR against workers of Youth Congress Committee and NSUI and arrested six persons including students who were not present at the rally.

The police also conducted search operations to nab six other Congress workers.

However, in acknowledgment of their innocence, these six were granted anticipatory bail today, he added.

In addition, the six arrested individuals were also produced before the Court and granted bail on execution of PR bond of Rs 60,000 each today, the chairman informed.

Sanoujam Shyamcharan further said that the Legal Department of MPCC is prepared to face any legal battle if such cases continue to be dragged to Court.

At this juncture, he decried the reportedly brutal witch-hunt carried out by the police to arrest the Congress workers and treating them like criminals.

He called into question the actions of the State Government and asked if the Government is adhering to the laws of the land.

Appealing to the public to respect the Constitution of India, he called for efforts to restore people's dwindling faith in the law.

He added that law enforcing agencies should also honour and abide by the rule of law and perform their duties diligently.

MPCC Legal Department vice-chairman Advocate Rabi Khan and MPCC secretary general Wahidur Rahaman were also present at the press conference.
