YAS Prin Secy assures general holiday on Players' Day

YAS principal secretary SS Chabra said that necessary steps will be taken up to declare Players' Day as a general,holiday.
Every year on February 25, the state has been observing Players' Day commemorating the day Manipur won the Raja Bhalendra Singh Memorial Trophy by wresting the team championship title of the 5th National Games in 1999 after winning 49 gold medals, 24 silver medals and 39 bronze medals.
Speaking as chief guest of the Players' Day observance held at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium here on Friday, SS Chabra expressed his belief that Manipuri players will perform better in national and international arena if sports infrastructure are developed further, and modern and scientific training facilities made accessible to the players.
The state government as well as parents of the emerging sportspersons need to take proactive role so as to continue the culture of sporting excellence and maintain the title of powerhouse of sports forever.
In this regard, the government is developing sports infrastructure by setting up district sports centres under Khelo India Scheme, he said.
YAS secretary T Phulen informed that the department has made a proposal for earmarking fund in the state budget to provide Rs 50,000 annual grant to recognised state level sports association in order to promote sports.
There are plans to develop modern sports infrastructure and to provide financial aid in organising state and national level championships.
The department will add national level championships for some select discipline as calendar events of the department to encourage state players, he added.
Olympian Ksh Thoiba, YAS officials, coaches and players attended the observance function.
Some select players were also honoured at the event.
