Ukhrul to host 1st Wung Football League

Ukhrul District is all set to kick off the first edition of Wung Football League on April 22 .
The tournament is being organised by Meiphung Foundations and conducted under the aegis of Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA).
The Wung Football League will witness participation of eight teams, among which six teams are from Ukhrul district, while the remaining two teams are from Kamjong district, Wung Football League secretary Worngachan Shatsang said in a press statement on Thursday.
He informed that the eight participating teams are United Brothers Football Club (Ukhrul), Hunphung Phungcham Football Association (Ukhrul), Haokok Football Club (Ukhrul), Pheichon Football Club (Ukhrul), Vareihao Football Academy (Ukhrul), Meiphung FC (Ukhrul), North East Regional Athletic Union (Kamjong), and Oriental Club Phungyar (Kamjong) .
The tournament will be running from April 22 till May 13, he added.
According to Shatsang, the eight participating teams will be going head-to-head in a single round robin format and the team with the most points at the end of the league will be crowned champions of the Wung Football League and walk away with a plethora of prizes, including cash prize of Rs 2.2 lakh, a running trophy, medals, and more.
The next four teams in the top five will then face each other in a semi-final playoff for the Wung Football Cup, which has its own set of prizes and benefits including a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a running cup, and medals for the winners, he stated.
The League has been created with an intention to provide a platform for young budding talents from both the districts to showcase their talents and to build a sustainable football ecosystem by supporting the participating clubs.
The organiser, Meiphung Productions, has also gone to great length in collaborating with the Indigenous Hills Network to telecast all the league matches live on their YouTube channel, he mentioned.
To kick off the league, the inaugural match will be played between Hunphun Phungcham Football Association (HPFA) and Meiphung FC at 1 pm on April 22.Apart from the cash prizes and trophies to be given at the end of the league, individuals who show outstanding performances in various categories such as players, coaches and referees, will be rewarded with individual prizes, Shatsang added.
