Imphal, April 20 2023:
Advocate Rabi Khan on Thursday filed a complaint to the Director General of Police and Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) requesting for initiation of strict legal against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Minority Morcha president Makakmayum Asker Ali for disrespecting the law profession, interfering in duty and spreading false information on his Facebook account.
Addressing a press meet held at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday, Rabi informed that BJP Minority Morcha president Makakmayum Asker Ali alias MK Aatif Asker Ali (37) s/o Md Nawab Ali alias Ibotombi of Lilong Haoreibi, Thoubal district uploaded his (Rabi) photo, a Vakalatnama along with a statement warning of releasing the photograph and detailed information of lawyers representing people accused in drug cases, on the Facebook accounts of Robarth Oinam, Subhas Waikhom, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Facebook page and on Asker's own account.
"Asker's statements are basically threatening my life and challenging the lawyer community.
Majority of the cases that I have handled till date are not drugs-related.
His (Asker) allegations show their lack of education and knowledge about the law", he remarked.
Questioning who, aside from lawyers, will appear as counsels in the court with regard to drug cases; Rabi stated that as per the Indian legal system, it is up to the courts to judge who is guilty or innocent.
A lawyer's duty is to defend his/her client in the court and ensure the judgement is in the client's favour.
If a person is unable to engage a lawyer, the court assigns a lawyer to ensure he/she gets a fair trial.
Stating that most of the cases he has handled so far are all justified; Rabi clarified that the only "questionable" was the incident of stones pelted at police vehicles in a drug bust case.
However, uploading the details of an advocate on a social media platform like Facebook without their consent, seems to be a personal attack and a challenge to the lawyer community.
The advocate then informed that a letter had been written to All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) and other related organisations in this regard.
The president of AMBA had informed Makakmayum Asker Ali (MK Asker Ali) to clarify on the matter within a week.
However, neither Asker Ali has clarified on the matter till date nor has AMBA taken up any further course of action, he conveyed.
Raising suspicions of a possible attempt on his life, Rabi said that if anything were to happen to him, MK Asker Ali and his accomplices should be held responsible.
He (Rabi) continued that if the police Department and Cyber Crime fail to take up any action, he will approach the Manipur High Court.
He then said that it would be an easy task for such a person to threaten a civilian considering he (Asker) has no qualm in threatening the lawyer community.
It is also questionable under whose authority do they have the power to threaten a lawyer for taking a case.
Thus, Rabi urged the state police to take strict legal action against the aforementioned people.
