Imphal, April 20 2023:
Chief Minister N Biren on Thursday inspected several ongoing works being taken up in different parts of the state, and said that the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in delivering its promises.
After inspection of the catchment areas of Singda Dam, ropeway site at Marjing Hill and ongoing construction works of Water and Amusement Park at Thenguchingjin, the CM said that the present government has already inaugurated and delivered several projects to the public in its first year, which include Kangla Nongpok Thong, Polo Statue at Marjing, and Olympian Park among others.
Now, the government is planning to deliver various projects to the people in the current year, he said and added that the main priority is the issue of water.
Singda Dam has dried up and the state is facing water scarcity especially in Imphal.
However, the government is managing with water from Thoubal Project and some rain in recent times, the CM said.
While pointing out that siltation caused by deforestation in the catchment area of Singda Dam has become a serious issue, Biren confided that clearing the silt is being accorded top priority.
He also said that stationing police personnel, erecting fencing and tree plantation drives will be taken up in the catchment area.
At Marjing Hill, construction of a ropeway is underway and the government is targeting to complete it by December this year, the CM said.
Biren also stressed on the importance of preserving forests and said the people cannot blame nature for the destructions due to heavy storms and heat waves.
"It is all our own doing.
Dense forest and trees used to protect us from natural calamities but in their absence, we are facing the impact," he said.
Stating that the government will be taking up a mass tree plantation drive in the state, he appealed to the people to support the effort by planting trees to counter climate change.
Though the whole world is facing the impact of climate change and global warming, he strongly believes that the state can minimise the impact and reverse the effect to some extent by planting more trees in the hills, Biren added.
During the inspection visit, the CM was accompanied by water resources minister Awangbou Newmai, PHE minister L Susindro Meitei, Andro MLA Th Shyamkumar and officials of departments concerned.
