Sensitization programme on "Child sexual abuse" conducted

Imphal, April 20 2023:
Department of Psychiatry, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat, Imphal under the aegis of Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India today organised a training cum sensitization programme for students and teachers on "Child sexual abuse" at UNACCO school, Khongman.
The programme began with a welcome address by P Surchandra, principal UNACCO school, said a release issued by UNACCO school.
Prof Dr K Shantibala Devi, Project Director & Head, Department of Psychiatry, JNIMS, sensitized the students on how to cope and prepare for the challenges of life.
She emphasized on the different types of abuse- sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and invasion of private space.

She also warned that children, are vulnerable to this issue and are at risk, so they should stay sensitive and increase their awareness about sexual abuse.
She mentioned that communication and bonding with parents, friends and elders is the only way to recover from post traumatic experiences.
"Teachers should also be sensitized about the behavioural changes of students and alert them on personal safety guidelines", she added.
Prof Dr K Shantibala Devi further urged the parents to be more sensitive and attentive to the issues brought up by the child.
Dr Nelson Loitongbam, Project Consultant & Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, JNIMS, delivered a lecture on the topic, "Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act 2012)" .
Elaborating on the importance of reporting to police by the victim, Dr Nelson encouraged the victims to not keep the incident in the dark and be more open to their parents.
Hingba Joyson, Liaison Officer & Medical Social Worker, Department of Psychiatry, JNIMS, enlightened the students on the punishment that can be meted out to the offender once found guilty.
As part of the event, Principal of UNACCO School felicitated the members of the training team namely Prof Dr K Shantibala Devi; Dr Nelson Loitongbam; Hingba Joyson and Grace Khaute.
