Imphal, April 20 2023:
The Central Government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in delivering to the public what has been promised, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said today.
Following inspection of the catchment areas of Singda Dam, ropeway site at Marjing Hill and ongoing construction works of Water and Amusement Park at Thenguchingiin, the Chief Minister said the incumbent Government has already inaugurated and delivered several projects to the public in its first year like Kangla Nongpok Thong, Polo Statue at Marjing and Olympian Park, among others.
Now, the Government is planning to deliver various projects to the people next year, he said adding that the main priority is the issue of water.
"As Singda Dam has dried up, we are facing water scarcity, specially in Imphal.
We are however managing now with water from Thoubal Project and some rain in recent time", he said.
Siltation caused by deforestation in the catchment area at Singda Dam has become a serious issue, and now the priority is to clear the silt, he said.
Other than stationing police personnel in the area, fencing and tree plantation drives will be taken up in the catchment area, Biren said.
At Marjing Hill, he said that construction of a ropeway is underway and the same is targeted for completion by December this year.
N Biren further stressed on the importance of preserving forest covers and said, "We cannot blame nature for the destructions due to heavy storms and heat waves.
"It is all our own doing", he said and appealed to the people for mass tree plantation.
Stating that the Government will be taking up a mass tree plantation drive in the State, he appealed to the people to support the same effort so as to counter climate change.
"We can lessen the effects of climate change to some extent by planting more trees in the hills", the Chief Minister stated.
During the inspection at Singda Dam, the Chief Minister was accompanied by Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai, Public Health Engineering Minister L Susindro Meitei and officials concerned.
