Betel nuts seized

Jiribam, January 11 2023:
A team of Jiribam police station and Special Mobile Patrol Unit, Jiribam recovered 450 gunny bags of dried betel nuts (supari) from two Tata trucks during a mobile frisking and checking at Leingangpokpi police out post along NH-37 this morning.
The team also arrested two drivers and three handymen in this connection.
The five arrested persons have been identified as Khushed Khan (47) s/o Chahat Khan of Manna Ka, Alwar Rajasthan; Ajim Uddin Barbhuya (28) s/o Anam Uddin Barbhuya of Kalain Tarapur Cachar, Assam; Anowar Hussain (25) s/o Abdul Kalam oi Kalain Bareitalli Part I, Cachar, Assam; Dichamdhai Panmei (26) s/o Meshui Panmei of Rengpang village, Noney and Saidul Hussain Talukdar (31) s/o Ali Ahamed Talukdar oi Dudhpatil Part VI, Silchar, Cachar, Assam.
Reportedly, the approximate value of the seized betel nuts is Rs 93,60,000 in the local market.
It may be noted that the mobile frisking and checking was carried out after District Police, Jiribam received a telephonic information from 39 Assam Rifles on the night on January 10 about the transportation of some illegal items from Imphal to Jiribam along NH-37.Upon checking the two trucks, the team recovered 234 gunny bags of dried betel nuts from one truck and 216 gunny bags from the other.
On questioning it was reportedly ascertained that all the dried betel nuts were brought from Sugnu in Kakching district and were being illegally transported to Silchar in Cachar district of Assam.
Consequently, the two Tata trucks were seized and the two drivers along with three helpers were arrested around 6 am .
