Jiribam police seizes betel nuts worth ₹93.6 lakh

Jiribam, January 11 2023:
A joint team of Jiribam police station and Special Mobile Patrol Unit Jiribam seized 450 gunny bags containing dried betel nuts from two trucks (RJ 14 GH-7920/AS 01 MC-6389) during checking at Leingangpokpi police outpost along NH-37 in the wee hours on Wednesday.
The seized dried betel nuts are estimated to worth around Rs 93.6 lakh in the local market.
According to police report, acting on information provided by 39 Assam Rifles, a joint team of Jiribam police station and Special Mobile Patrol Unit, Jiribam conducted frisking and checking operation at Leingangpokpi police outpost along NH-37 .
Around 2 am Wednesday, the two trucks coming from Imphal side were stopped for checking.
On inspecting the truck (RJ 14 GH - 7920), it was found loaded with 234 gunny bags containing dried betel nuts, while the truck (AS 01 MC - 6389) had 216 gunny bags filled with dried betel nuts.
During questioning, the drivers and helpers of the trucks disclosed that all the betel nuts were being transported to Silchar in Assam.
Subsequently, all the gunny bags, 450 in total containing dried betel nuts and the two trucks were seized at 5.30 am, while the two drivers and three helpers were also formally arrested at around 6 am .
