Polyhouse for floriculture inaugurated

A naturally ventilated polyhouse for floriculture established as a part of CSIR Floriculture Mission, was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Mongjam Mamang Leikai Chingkhong, Imphal East residence of Thongam Joysana by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research -North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Imphal senior principal scientist Dr H Birkumar Singh.
The polyhouse was inaugurated in the presence of Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) president Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University faculty member Dr Homen Thangjam, among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr H Birkumar explained that objective of the Mission is conservation and promotion of indigenous orchid species of Manipur through encouragement of beneficiaries of the polyhouse to collect and grow indigenous orchid species.
He also stated that when the government of India undertakes any scheme, it examines the potential of the prospective beneficiary, feasibility of the space where the scheme can be implemented and finally, the prospect of further expansion.
"I am glad to know that Th Joysana has been already working for years in bee-keeping, producing organic honey.
Moreover, he has been maintaining a nursery for flowers.
In appreciation of his sincerity, work culture and dedication, we decided to provide him this polyhouse," he said.
According to Dr Homen Thangjam, on account of climate change various plant species are disappearing from the face of earth.
Providing polyhouses to deserving beneficiaries will go a long way to conserve and promote exotic species of Manipur's orchids, he said.
Thanking Dr H Birkumar and CSIR-NEIST, Th Joysana said he has been living in the isolated hamlet along with his wife and three kids for more than 10 years tending to bees and undertaking farming to sustain the family.
After the inauguration function, Dr Birkumar also presented Joysana one bag each of urea (50 kg), SSP (50 kg) & MOP (50 kg), 10 bags of ready-to-use coco pith wet (25 kg), one packet of nursery poly bag, hose pipe (one roll), one battery operated spray, garden tools including two garden trowels, one five-litre water tank, one hedge cutter, one spade, one secateurs (pruning shears) and one bill hook and one roll of aluminium wire.
