Imphal, December 28 2022:
Locals destroyed poppies planted at Phailengmol hill range in Kangpokpi district.
One of the locals, Jampu Khongsai said that some miscreants continue to grow poppies discreetly despite strong warnings from the CSOs of the area and the village chief.
Jampu continued that almost all the poppy growers are from poor families who have limited resources to earn a living.
Claiming that the Government is yet to provide an alternative source of livelihood to poppy farmers of the area despite repeated assurance, he added that they carried out the destruction drive to prevent police from arresting their village chief and as a support to the War on Drug campaign of the Government.
He said that the Officer in Charge of Maphou police station also assisted in carrying out the drive.
Meanwhile, security forces under the supervision of Imphal East and NAB SPs destroyed a poppy plantation on 30 acres of land at NP Khullen and B Gamnom hill range in Kangpokpi on December 26 .
