Importance of adherence to Supreme Court Guidelines for safety of school going students highlighted

A State level workshop on 'Safe and Secure School Environment with focus on implementation of Supreme Court Guidelines for Safe and Secure Transport Facilities for Children' was held today at Manipur Press Club.
The workshop was jointly organised by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR).
Phurailatpam Manibabu Sharma, Chairperson of MCPCR; Ojesh Mutum, Member Secretary, Manipur State Legal Services Authority; Ngangom Uttam MCS, Director of Social Welfare, Manipur and Bantee Singh Konthoujam MCS, Joint Director Social Welfare graced the programme as the presidium members.

Emphasizing on the objectives of the workshop, Sumel Yumnam, Programme Officer of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights said that the transportation of school students should be done in a safe and secure manner.
He maintained that the school authorities and transport authorities should strictly abide by the guidelines laid by the Supreme Court with regards to the safety of school children.
Ensuring that the school students are in a protected environment should be the utmost priority of the management committees since the students spend most of their time in schools, he added.
He further stressed on the need of maintaining hygiene and sanitization in schools for the well-being of the students.
Apart from the above factors, school authorities should ensure that their respective schools have adequate infrastructure for providing quality education, he continued.
He also stated that the authorities concerned will discuss with the stakeholders regarding recommendations which can be added apart from the existing ones in the interest of the students during the workshop.
The Programme Officer also expressed dismay over the recent incident of the tragic road mishap which killed seven students and two staff of Thambalnu Higher Secondary School and prayed that such incidents do not recur.
