Drivers' body appeals for protection

Imphal, January 12 2023:
All Manipur Petroleum Tankers' Drivers' Union (AMPTDU) has highlighted the hardships faced by drivers while carrying out their duties and appealed to the state government for providing protection to ensure safe journey.
Addressing a press meet at its office premises, North AOC, here, on Thursday, Union secretary Chongtham Shankarjit said that the drivers are serving the society braving all odds along the highways.
However, they are often subjected to threat and assault from UG outfits in hill areas.
Despite the repeated assurances from the government, they are still facing such threats and illegal extortion along the highways, he said, while urging for a more stringent security measures to ensure safe passage for the drivers.
He also appealed to the people of the state to refrain from looking down upon the drivers but to honour their profession considering their contribution to the society.
He informed that the union will observe the 34th Drivers' Day at its Malom office on January 14 .
