Importance of 'Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013' deliberated

A one day awareness programme on "The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013" was held today at Court Hall of Manipur University (MU).
The awareness programme has been organised by the Department of Law, MU to commemorate the 8th anniversary of notification of the landmark legislation on December 9, 2013.The programme was graced by Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Naorem Lokendro, Head of Department of Law, Associate Professor Dr Yumnam Premananda, Presiding Officer of Internal Complaints Committee, MU, Professor Internal Complaints Committee, MU, Dr Robita Sorokhaibam and Registrar, Dr W Chandbabu as the presidium members.

Delivering the keynote address, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Dr Th Tapasini said that the main objective of the programme is to protect the women from sexual harassment in workplace.
She mentioned that after the passing of 'The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013' the process to demand basic rights in workplace has been enhanced considerably.
Today's awareness programme is focused on the women employees of the varsity to sensitize them about the Act and to spread awareness how the Act works, its proceedings and provisions, how to file a complaint and so on, she added.
The VC, Professor Naorem Lokendra Singh while speaking on the occasion said that the historical accounts like Nupi Lan and the existence of 'Meira Paibi, 'Nishabandh' signifies that the Manipuri society upholds women with utmost regard.
He further stated that women excel in many fields though the sex ratio is comparatively low and lauded the performances of Manipuri women in varied fields who have brought laurels to the State.
Stressing on the need of organising such awareness programmes, the VC said that it will help in educating the women about the Act thereby helping in bringing equality in work place.
