Discourse on gender-based crimes at workplace held

Department of Law, Manipur University organised a one-day awareness programme on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2012 (No 14 of 2013) at the varsity on Monday.
The awareness programme was attended by Manipur University vice chancellor Prof Dr Naorem Lokendra Singh as chief guest and Department of Law MU head Dr Yumnam Premananda Singh as president while MU registrar Prof Dr W Chandbabu Singh and internal complaints committee, MU presiding officer Prof Dr Robita Sorokhaibam were guests of honour.
Speaking at the programme, Prof N Lokendra pointed out that role of Manipuri women in various socio - political affairs since time immemorial could be comprehended from the movement of Meira Paibi and Nisha Bandh, the two Nupi Lal in the 19th century and existence of a court under the queen named 'Patcha', where cases related with women were settled.
Maintaining that the women of Manipur could be termed as the torch bearer of culture, Lokendra said that Manipuri women have been following their dress code strictly.
They dress according to the events like separate attires for wedding, funeral and religious rituals.
As such Manipuri women are highly respected and kept in a special position.
They maintain and follow the culture and tradition of the land.
However, with advancement in socio-economic sector, culture is also changing.
As such, the awareness programme is being conducted so as to discuss the different incidents occurred with the changing times, he added.
Lokendro observed that there is change in social norm due to change in socio cultural practices brought on by modernisation, new ideas and spread of information.
Thus, the awareness programme organised by Department of Law, MU on Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2012 (No 14 of 2013), which is important and sensitive, is very timely, he added.
