Special Swachhta campaign held at Lamsang Bazar

Special National Swachhta Campaign was observed on Tuesday at Lamsang Bazar under the theme "Waste to wealth by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal along with ICAR-KVK, Imphal West.
As a part of the campaign, a digital video titled "Improved Composting Techniques" related to the topic of' Waste to wealth" developed by ICAR on how to prevent burning of farm waste in the field by making vermin-compost and its utilization as manure was screened for the farmers.
Attending the event as the chief guest, education minister S Rajen Singh stressed the need to revive the traditional method of making manure.
He said conversion of paddy straw and stubble and vegetable waste from the kitchen into manure through vermin-compost reduces the dependence on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides while increasing the income of farmers as well as improving health of the farmers through tidy maintenance of the backyard.
He also highlighted the harmful consequence of burning of paddy straw and stubble in the farm and cautioned that such methods kill the friendly microbes in the soil.
Giving emphasis on keep ing the environment clean, he said that government has launched a cleanliness mission called Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and urged the people to follow the basic guidelines and have a proper sanitation system.
Under the stated objective to improve sanitary facilities, the government has also constructed sanitary toilets' at Nagar Panchayats and municipal areas, said the minister and revealed that new projects and proposals are also in the pipeline.
The event was also attended by Imphal West 1 GP Level Multipurpose Co-Operative Society Ltd chairman M Keso Singh and ICAR Manipur Centre joint director Dr I Meghachandra Singh as guest of honour and president respectively.
As a part of the campaign, tree saplings were planted by the dignitaries in the surrounding areas of the Lamsang Bazar community hall along with a cleanliness drive.
A total of 200 participants including scientific staff, SMSs of KVK, administrative and technical staff and local farmers took in the programme.
