Interaction prog on nematodes held

A one-day training programme for farmers on Nematodes pest of rice and its management' was organised at the Panchayat Ghar of Yairipok Top Chingtha Pukhri Achouba, Imphal East district on Thursday.
Sponsored by ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Nematodes in Agriculture, New Delhi, the programme was jointly organised by ICAR-AICRP on Nematodes in Agriculture, Imphal; All Manipur Farmers Development Association and Top Chingtha Farmers' Club.
Central Agricultural University (CAU) Imphal assistant nematology scientist Dr Ksh Sumita and ICAR, New Delhi scientist Dr K Kranti attended as experts and informed the farmers about nematodes via a slide presentation.
In his speech as the chief guest, Dr Kranti said that nematodes are normally present in polluted soil or in fields where only one type of crop has been planted or due to usage of defective seeds.
Farmers generally are unaware of the nematodes afflicting the plants, he noted.
In all, 100 farmers participated in the training programme, which was also attended by Top Chingtha GP pradhan Yumbam Tomba as president, Top Chingtha Lai Committee president M Nodiachand, and All Manipur Farmers' Club president Maibam Daoji as guests of honour.
An interaction programme was also organised, which was followed by distribution of Neem bags to the farmers as one of the preventive methods against nematodes.
