Imphal, June 16 2026:
Families of three protesters killed in the April 7 firing by CRPF on protesters at Tronglaobi were given material assistance today through generous donations made voluntarily by concerned citizens.
The assistance was handed over to the families of Late Laishram Jiten, Late Wahengbam Boby, and Late Huidrom Henry.
While the three families are economically disadvantaged, one of them is internally displaced.
The items distributed included Phisakols (fly-shuttle looms used in traditional Manipuri weaving), sewing machines, bicycles, a gas cylinder, books, study tables, chairs, table lamps, and a football.
The looms and sewing machines were provided to help create a sustainable source of livelihood for the wives of the deceased.
The initiative to provide the assistance was supported by citizens from diverse backgrounds, including students, academics, professionals, entrepreneurs, doctors, engineers, scientists, advocates, journalists, rock musicians, retirees, members of the Manipuri diaspora, and non-Manipuris, said Ringo Pebam, one of the contributors in a statement.
A total of Rs 1,24,740 was mobilised for the initiative.
It includes Rs 1,07,250 raised through voluntary contributions from 139 contributors between April and June 2026, and remaining balance of Rs 17,490 from earlier public donations received during 2023-24 for assistance to IDPs.
Fourteen Manipuris residing in the United Kingdom donated Rs 45,000, Ringo said.
The material aid worth Rs 98,190 was given to the families of the three deceased today, Ringo said.
Receiving the aid, Laishram Ashalata, the wife of Late Laishram Jiten, currently residing at the relief camp at Moirang College, expressed gratitude towards the contributors.
"We are grateful to everyone who remembers our family during this difficult time.
Knowing that so many people care for us has brought comfort and encouragement to our family," she said.
Hemam Orcin Leima, the young wife of Late Wahengbam Boby of Kumbi Terakhong, said, "Losing my husband has been very difficult for our family.
The support and kindness shown by so many people have given us the courage to face the future and carry on" .
Huidrom Bemma Leima, the young wife of Late Huidrom Henry, expressed similar sentiments of gratitude.
Of the total amount, Rs 98,190 was spent on assistance for the families of the three deceased.
Rs 5,505 was spent on medicines and diagnostic investigations (ultrasound and BT/CT) for an internally displaced woman from Churachandpur currently residing in Kakching Khunou, Ringo said.
The remaining Rs 21,045 has been reserved for buying Class XI and XII textbooks for IDP students residing in relief camps at Akampat, Urup and Lamding, Ringo said.
"Efforts are underway to obtain used textbooks from NEET-UG aspirants after their June 21 re-examination, as the required number exceeds our present means.
Any remaining funds will be used to purchase exercise books," Ringo said.
