Nagas pitch for resettlement at Moreh

Imphal, August 26 2026: Nagas displaced from the border town of Moreh during the Kuki-Naga conflict of 1992 have demanded resettlement at the border town.

The Moreh Naga Village Authority has also appealed to the Government to extend relief to the Nagas displaced from Moreh as is done to Kukis and Meiteis displaced during the current conflict.

Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Moreh Naga Village Authority chairman Marashang Hashuwoshi said that Nagas settled at Moreh from 1974 onward and there were 73 Naga villages with a total population of 539 .

At that time, all the communities settled at Moreh lived in Moreh.

Kukis from Myanmar crossed into Manipur and started settling at Moreh.

Kukis already settled in Manipur joined hands with the Kuki immigrants and launched a violent offensive against the Nagas and burnt down a large number of Nagas houses and destroyed all their properties, Marashang recalled.

Unable to face the fierce offensive, the Nagas of Moreh fled for their lives and took refuge at a relief camp opened at Irong village, Tengnoupal.

The displaced Nagas stayed at the relief camp for two-three months.

During that period, the Government provided some relief materials at the intervention of the UNC and other Naga CSOs, he said.

After this, the displaced Nagas did not receive any aid from the Government.

Marashang said that several memoranda were submitted to the Government including the Deputy Commissioner concerned in 2014 to let the Nagas resettle at Moreh but there has been no response till date.

The Government gave financial help and material aid to some of the people during the Kuki-Naga conflict of 1992 but a large majority of the people were left out.

Saying that both Kuki and Meitei people displaced by the violent conflict which erupted on May 3, 2023 have been receiving assistance from the Government regularly, the Moreh Naga Village Authority Chairman urged the Government to provide similar assistance to the displaced Nagas too.

He said that their main demand is resettlement of the displaced Nagas at their native villages at Moreh.

Marashang said that the displaced Nagas of Moreh are still in possession of their homestead pattas.

All the details of the landowners are also available in the official records at the State Government's Settlement Office, he added.
