More organisations join call for NRC, extend support to 5 CSOs

Imphal/Bishnupur/Thoubal, August 26 2026: Scores of civil society organisations have endorsed demand for updating the National Register of Citizens prior to Census 2027 .

In separate statements, the organisations said they fully support the 5 CSOs' public movement demanding NRC .

The 5 CSOs include All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) .

The organisations and federating units which have extended endorsed the NRC demand include the Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) Imphal East Committee, MSF Bishnupur District Committee, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) Tellou Unit, Kha-Nongpok Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Bamon Kampu, Kshetrigao Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, Meira Paibi Apunba Lup Bishnupur District, All Thanga Area Meira Paibi Organisation, All Andro Meira Paibi Association, Nambol Area Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, United Clubs' Organisation of Bishnupur District, AMAWOVA Ningthoukhong Unit, AMAWOVA Bishnupur Joypur Khunou Unit, AMAWOVA Saiton Unit, and Imphal East District United Clubs' Organisation.

In separate statements, the civil bodies asserted that the Census 2027 exercise in Manipur must be held only after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated for the State and peace has been restored allowing internally displaced persons (IDPs) to return to their original homes and villages.

Demographic imbalance brought about by rampant and uncontrolled illegal immigration from across the border has been an issue facing the State for decades.

Conducting census operations amid such circumstances risks identifying illegal immigrants as genuine citizens and bringing about further demographic imbalances, said the organisations.

The demand for updating the NRC prior to the census is a legitimate and rightful demand.

The exercise will help detect and identify illegal immigrants, and protect the future of the indigenous people and the State, added the organisations.

The civil bodies said they will fully support every decision of the 5 CSOs with regard to the demand being raised for updating the NRC .

In a separate statement, the Ningombam Ideal Youth Club Thoubal has also endorsed the public call for NRC .
