Imphal, August 26 2026:
The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) has extended its support to the demand raised by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) and other organisations for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State before the commencement of the census exercise.
In a statement, the STDCM said that people of Manipur have been opposing the census as conducting the exercise without first identifying illegal immigrants would not reflect the true demographic picture of the State.
It also said that abnormal population growth was detected in some Sub-Divisions of the hill districts of Manipur in the previous census report.
It also raised concerns over the issue of illegal immigrants and endorsed the demand to defer the census until the NRC is updated.
STDCM, meanwhile, stated that its annual general body meeting will be held on August 30 at Minuthong.
