Imphal, August 26 2026: A sit-in protest was staged at Pishumthong Keithel today, demanding that no census-related work be undertaken in Manipur until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated.

Residents of Pishumthong Oinam Leikai, Haobam Marak and Ningom Leikai took part in the protest, holding placards bearing slogans such as "No NRC, No Census", "NRC Updation Before Census" and "No IDP Settlement, No Census" among others.

The protesters contended that conducting the census without addressing the issues of illegal immigration and internally displaced persons (IDPs) would be unacceptable to the people.

They also said they would support all movements demanding updation of the NRC before the commencement of the census exercise.

Meanwhile, Singjamei Kendra Apunba Clubs (SKACs) conducted a poster campaign at various places in Singjamei, including Chingamathak and Singjamei Keithel, demanding updation of the NRC before the census.

Speaking on the occasion, SKACs publicity secretary Th Sushilkumar said Manipur could be pushed into uncertainty if the census is conducted without identifying illegal immigrants.

As delimitation would be undertaken after the census, identification of the illegal immigrants is crucial, he said, urging the Government to update the NRC first.
