Binalakshmi backs call for NRC

Imphal, August 26 2026: The indigenous people of Manipur may be overwhelmed by illegal immigrants in the next 10/20 years if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is not updated in the State, cautioned Binalakshmi Nepram, founder-director of the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network (MWGSN) .

She made the statement during a programme held at Mapao Zingsho Bamboo Park today to felicitate teachers of the College of Food Technology, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, who developed bamboo wine techno- logy.

The felicitation ceremony was organised by Apunba Imagee Machasing (AIMS) .

Speaking to the media, Binalakshmi said indigenous communities in Sikkim and Tripura had become minorities in their own States.

She expressed concern that Manipur could face a similar fate to the indigenous communities of Tri- pura and Sikkim if the NRC is not updated in the State.

Stating that illegal immigrants must be identified to safeguard the interests of the State's indigenous communities, she said unchecked migration could lead to population engineering, which would adversely affect the indigenous population.

She further said that the rise in the population of illegal immigrants would adversely affect the political, economic and social interests of the indigenous communities, reiterating that updating the NRC is crucial in preventing such developments.

She urged the Government to understand the sentiments of the people and take necessary measures to update NRC in the State before the commencement of the population census exercise.
