Imphal, December 30 2022:
Traffic Control Police wing of the state headed by SP Wungpam Kasar collected Rs 21 lakh in the form of penalty from traffic regulation violators in Imphal West and Imphal East districts in the current year.
While the traffic control police wing is for the whole state, traffic police of other districts apart from Imphal East and Imphal West districts function under the supervision of their respective DCs.
As per report received by The People's Chronicle, Rs 18 lakh was collected as fines in Imphal West district alone while Rs 3 lakh collected in Imphal East.
The same amount has been deposited in the treasury accounts of the respective districts.
To improve accountability and transparency and real time collection of fine/penalty for traffic rules violation, the use of e-chal-lan started in 2022.Apart from ensuring transparency, the system also helps in reducing workload and paper work of traffic police personnel.
With the aim of reducing commuters' problem due to rising traffic volume, ensuring smooth movement for commuters and to spread awareness of traffic issues in Imphal City , TCP also started a new initiative of broadcasting live traffic report at specific time slots from September 22 onwards.
The initiative was taken up in collaboration with All India Radio, Imphal and Radio Nongin, and is presently broadcast on FM Sangai Channel (103.5 MHz) and Radio Nongin (90.8 MHz FM) .
To protect and facilitate proper functioning of traffic personnel manning various road junctions, 10 traffic pedestal/rain sheds were constructed in 2022 under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model at Nityaipat Chuthek, Kangla Western Gate, Old Power house, North AOC, Khongnang Ani Karak, Minuthong Crossing (Imphal West), Minuthong Crossing (Imphal East), Keishampat, Kwakeithel and Uripok Canteen Crossing.
Further, to regulate flow of traffic, 30 specialised barricades have been installed in Imphal city during the current year.
These barricades are different from the much broader usual security barricades that cause hindrance in traffic flow.
With the belief that creating traffic awareness and educating people are not the responsibility of police alone, and that other sections of the society should chip in to ensure road safety, TCP also conducts traffic awareness programme for National Cadet Corps (NCC) and other private security agencies regularly.
They are taught to spread awareness about important aspects of road safety among all road users, including knowledge of traffic rules, regulations and road signs, and punishment to drivers violating traffic rules and speed limits.
TCP conducted five sessions for NCC cadets during the current year.
Leading from the front in empowering women, the morning shift duty at five of the most important traffic junctions of Imphal city namely GPO, Nityaipat, Kangla Western gate and LIC crossing are exclusively manned by women personnel of TCP Wing.
As a gesture of appreciation for this initiative and to encourage them further, a grand Ningol Chakkouba celebration was hosted for the women personnel of TCP Wing and gifts were distributed to them this year.
Important events like Manipur Sangai festival 2022 and Durand Cup 2022 drew a large number of visitors, thus, increasing traffic volume on road manifold.
TCP Wing ensured proper management of traffic during such events, especially near the event venues.
Dynamic diversions were also made to ensure smooth traffic management and facilitate commuters while ensuring safety of pedestrians on roads.
